  • The Journey of Odysseus

    Angelika Lukesch

    language (Ungewiss-Verlag/Germany, July 16, 2011)
Odysseus was one of the strongest, and, in particular, smartest heroes of the Greek Mythology. His cleverness had him survive several adventures successfully. Only due to Odysseus’s ruse, Troy was conquered by the Greeks. The famous Trojan Horse, in the hollow belly of which the strongest Greek heroes were hiding, was Odysseus’s idea. After conquering Troy, Odysseus wanted to sail home to his homeland Ithaca, where he was King. But above all, he wanted to see his beautiful wife Penelope and his son Telemachus. But it took Odysseus twenty years to return to his homeland.Due to the gods’ anger, he had to survive many odysseys on the sea, and had to pass many adventures. He fought against the one-eyed Cyclops, the Sirens, the Sorceress Circe, and against the sea monsters Scylla and Charybdis. At the end of his journey, after he had returned to Ithaca, he had to protect his wife Penelope from the men who had pestered her. Performing a spectacular feat, he re-conquered his royal court, his wife and his land. The picture book “The Journey of Odysseus” describes the adventures of the resourceful hero on a child-oriented, but not childish way. Children from the age of six, but also adults can delight in the stories of the Greek hero Odysseus.

  • The Return of Odysseus

    Michael Walker

eBook (Scorpion Press, Aug. 9, 2015)
Can a civilization teetering on the edge of destruction be saved through the strength of will of a single individual? Can a culture be rescued by the faithful few, given inspiration by a powerful leader? Can a deliberate conspiracy be defeated through decisive action—even though the conspiracy appears to have already won?Can an individual who has already given up his cause as hopeless, be persuaded to return to the fray and win?All of these questions—and more—are addressed in this masterful adaption of the last section of Homer’s classic work, “The Odyssey”, dealing with the final return of the long-lost King of Ithaca, Odysseus, to his homeland. As all familiar with the original story will know, in Odysseus’s absence following the Trojan War, his country Ithaca falls into anarchy with all manner of evil suitors seeking the hand of his wife—presumed to be a widow—in order to seize control of the kingdom. In this adaptation of that drama, Michael Walker takes its underlying premise—a king returning to his subverted realm—and weaves a suspense-filled tale involving characters present-day readers may recognise.Posited against the scenario of betrayal, fear and self-seeking, are the faithful few who have remained loyal to the missing king, hoping against hope that he will return and cleanse the nation. Is faith enough? Have they given up in the face of seemingly overwhelming numbers? Will they find the strength and courage to fight once again should the king return?Find out in the dramatic conclusion of this work, written in play format ready for stage presentation.

  • Odysseus Journey of Endurance

    Cobus Cronje

    language (, July 22, 2012)
The wanderings and extraordinary adventures of Odysseus are described in The Odyssey of Homer (700 B.C.) and a number of translations from the original Greek are available in the market at present. For the reader interested in the classics, these translations are the way to go, but they are not ideal for anyone only interested in the adventures of Odysseus. This is the market the writer is targeting with Odysseus Journey of Endurance.Homer had the tendency to stray from his main plot, taking the reader on a variety of digressions which are very interesting, but make following the main plot difficult. By and large this style of writing also means that the plot unfolds quite slowly. To complicate the matter further, in the case of The Odyssey events have not been organized in a chronological way. In this book, Odysseus Journey of Endurance, the writer addresses these problems in the following way:Firstly, he cuts out most of the digressions, incorporating only those which contribute towards understanding the main plot;Secondly, he organizes the events in a chronological way (ignoring Homer’s order as presented in the text); Finally, even though the events are organized in another way as presented by Homer, the main events are told consistent with Homer’s original version. So the writer presents Odysseus’ adventures in a chronological way and stay with the main plot all the time - which makes for easy reading, but in a way that you will be captivated from the beginning till the end. The way in which Odysseus survived the hardships of a journey of ten years from Troy to his home country, Ithaca, could not be described better as being a journey of endurance. He had to overcome challenges like the Cyclops Polyphemus, the goddess-sorcerer Circe, the Sirens, the Scylla and Charybdis sea monsters and many more. In the end he was the only one who survived – he lost all his men with whom he had left from Troy. Arriving at Ithaca, he was faced with the massive problem of the host of suitors who were competing for his wife Penelope’s hand. Read the book and find out how he solved this problem as well!
