  • American Sailing Ships: Their Plans and History

    Charles G. Davis

Paperback (Dover Publications, Feb. 15, 2012)
Master seaman, shipbuilder, and nautical chronicler Charles G. Davis here charts an anecdotal, highly personal course through our rich nautical history. Written in a style both entertaining and informal through which bubbles a genuine love of sailing vessels and sea lore, American Sailing Ships evokes the very feel of salt spray and rolling decks. In nearly 140 photographs, prints, and plans (most drawn by the author, an accomplished marine architect), you'll find a first-rate cross-section of a wide range of sailing ships from the eighteenth through early twentieth centuries. Here too is knowledgeable discussion of ship size, design, proportion, rigging details, and more. Included are Block Islanders, Clippers, Quoddy Boats, Packet Ships, Chebacco Boats, Bugeyes, Pinkys, Oyster Luggers, Fishing Schooners, Frigates, and others. American Sailing Ships offers lively discourse on shipbuilders such as 18th-century American designer Joshua Humphreys, whose frigates had no equal among the sailing men-of-war of any other nation; illuminating insights regarding crews, chains of command and life at sea; an account of how the Gloucester-built chebacco boat Fame earned the right to that name as a privateer during the War of 1812, outsailing and capturing vessels ten times its weight; and much more. Davis's classic work is sure to intrigue sailing enthusiasts, historians, Americana buffs, and model builders. American Sailing Ships, here in its first popularly priced paperback edition, promises the imaginative reader an unforgettable taste of seafaring excitement.

  • The Story Of American History

language (Jazzybee Verlag, July 21, 2012)
Some sort of a first book on American history is now quite generally used in schools as a preparation for the more intelligent study of a larger and more formal text-book in the higher grammar grades. For beginners, a mere compilation of facts is dry and unsatisfactory. Such books have now given place, for the most part, to those prepared on a more attractive and judicious plan. The real aim in a first book should be to interest boys and girls in the history of their country, and to encourage them to cultivate a taste for further study and reading. This book is intended for use in the earlier grammar grades and to be preliminary to the study of a more advanced work in the higher grades. The author has also kept in mind the fact that the school life of many children is brief, and that all their instruction in American history must come from a text-book of this kind.Contents:Preface.Chapter I. America In The Old Days.Chapter II. Columbus And The Discovery Of America.Chapter III. Sir Walter Raleigh And Captain John Smith.Chapter IV. The Story Of The Pilgrims.Chapter V. Only the leading events of certain periods and the personal achievements of a few representative "makers of our country" are treated in any detail. The subject is approached through biographical sketches of a few of the more illustrious actors in our nation's history. Some prominence is given to exceptional deeds of valor, details of everyday living in olden times, dramatic episodes, and personal incident...

This popular Lucent Books series has been updated to make music of all genres even more accessible, popular and culturally relevant in the 21st century; the set focuses on the history, music, musicians, and instruments behind specific musical styles.; For many people, popular music provides a soundtrack to their lives by entwining emotion with experience. It is little wonder, then, that eventful periods in American history are often defined by the pop music of the time. For example, big band jazz evokes memories of World War II for those who lived through that era, while songs from the 1960s often remind baby boomers of the drug-fueled hippie revolution. In this new addition to the Music Library, author Stuart Kallen traces the history of popular music in America from the sounds of Tin Pan Alley to Chicago jazz clubs, to southern rock nā€™ roll and country, to the British Invasion, to psychedelic rock and Woodstock, to garage band heroes and music video rock stars, to hip-hop tycoons and young American idols.; This new edition of the popular Lucent Books series has been updated to make music of all genres even more accessible, popular and culturally relevant in the 21st century. The set focuses on the history, music, musicians, and instruments behind specific musical styles -- from blues to indie rock to rap and more. It also addresses music videos, the advent of digital music stores and new portable digital delivery systems. Each title provides a historical overview of the development of a specific music genre; explores the roots and influences of the genre and the key components that are definitive of the style; discusses the pioneers of the music; and considers the changes the genre has undergone from its inception to its present status on the world scene. Informative sidebars, a glossary of music terms, a selective discography, an annotated bibliography, and a subject index provide readers with additional tools for discussion and research.

  • The Story of American History

    Albert Franklin Blaisdell, Christopher d'James

(CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, July 20, 2012)
Revisionism and political correctness are the bane of the historian. This reprint of a public domain 1900 elementary school American history textbook represents an unfiltered turn-of-the-century view of our nation's history from Pre-Columbus to the Spanish American War. It's likely closer to a primary source than anything we have today that's been filtered through multiple committees each attempting to advance their own agendas. If at all, Blaisdell is only unintentionally biased and at the very least, his account is an accurate view of a single perspective as opposed to today's texts which purport to be patently objective tellings. Handier than the free PDFs on the web, this you can hold, bookmark, highlight and shelve. An inexpensive imperative for any history buff.
