  • The Canterville Ghost and Other Stories

Oscar Wilde, Roy Macready, Spiders' House Audio

Audiobook (Spiders' House Audio, Feb. 23, 2016)
Oscar Wilde's classic comic ghost story was the first of his short stories to be published, in February 1887. It relates the experiences of Mr. Hiram B. Otis, an American minister and his family, when they move into Canterville Chase, an ancient pile haunted by the previous owner's dead ancestor, Sir Simon. Of course, Mr. Otis declares, "There is no such thing, sir, as a ghost", and all of Sir Simon's hauntings have no effect on the skeptical American family, with the exception of the daughter, Virginia, despite his most strenuous efforts. A beautifully told tale full of humor, but also of apposite social commentary. The two other stories in this volume are "The Sphinx Without a Secret" (May 1887) and "The Model Millionaire" (June 1887) and an essay, "The American Invasion" (March 1887).

eBook (Alma Books, June 29, 2017)
When the Americans Mr and Mrs Otis and their four children move into Canterville Chase, its previous occupant Lord Canterville warns them that the ghost of his ancestor still haunts the house. Their disbelief is soon shattered by the nightly sound of rattling chains in the hallways and the appearance of mysterious bloodstains in the living room. However, the ghost struggles to intimidate his new victims, as they counter his ghoulish behaviour with typically transatlantic pragmatism, offering lubricator for his chains and cleaning up the stains with detergent. As the spirit is deserted by his capacity to scare, Virginia, the Otises' daughter, gets to know him and learns the tragic tale behind his sad fate.Sparkling with his trademark wit, this classic tale is one of Oscar Wilde's finest stories and is presented here with three other comic mystery stories, 'Lord Arthur Savile's Crime', 'The Sphinx without a Secret' and 'The Model Millionaire', all of which were first published together in 1891. Contains: The Canterville Ghost, Lord Arthur Savile's Crime, The Sphinx Without a Secret, The Model Millionaire. • Casting the Runes: And Other Ghost Stories

    M. R. James, Michael Chabon

Hardcover (Oxford University Press, Sept. 5, 2002)
When we think of ghost stories, we tend to think of cub scouts cringing by a fire, s'mores at the ready, as some aging camp counselor tries to scare them witless with yet another tale from the crypt. But as Michael Chabon's marvelous introduction reminds us, the ghost story was once integral to the genre of the short story. Indeed, as he points out, it can be argued that the ghost story was the genre. Dickens's "A Christmas Carol," Henry James's "The Turn of the Screw"--most of the early short story writers wrote ghost stories as a matter of course. And the best writer of ghost stories, the acknowledged master, was M.R. James. In Casting the Runes, we have twenty-one tales that, in Chabon's words, "venture to the limits of the human capacity for terror and revulsion...armed only with an umbrella and a very dry wit." The stories here represent the best of James's work. They are set in the leisurely, late-Victorian, middle-class world of country houses, seaside inns, out-of-the-way railway stations, and cathedral closes, where gentlemen of independent means and antiquarian tastes suddenly find themselves confronted by terrifying agents of supernatural malice. But what these tales are really about, writes Chabon, "is ultimately the breathtaking fragility of life, of 'reality,' of all the structures that we have erected to defend ourselves from our constant nagging suspicion that underlying everything is chaos, brutal and unreasoning." The tales in Casting the Runes are both chilling fun and, as Chabon concludes, "unmistakably works of art." Anyone who loves short fiction or who enjoys a good scare will find these stories an irresistible delight.

    Oscar Wilde

    eBook (, Dec. 18, 2017)
Adapted work of classical literature from a writer who became famous for his mystical sad tales. This book is one of them. A ghost lived in the Canterville castle for a long time. They say he killed many generations there. Eventually, the house was sold. A new family moved to the castle. One day they sat down to dinner. Suddenly they saw a red stain on the floor. Later they learnt that blood stain belonged to the late wife of the ghost. Father cleaned the spot, but it appeared the next day. Every night the ghost wandered through the corridors bothering the family. Its chains were always clanking. One night when the ghost started walking again, father suggested him to lubricate the chain by oil. The ghost got very angry and decided to get revenge.
