  • The Fortieth Door

    Mary Hastings Bradley

Hardcover (D. Appleton and Company, March 15, 1920)
Very Good; New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1920. First Edition and First Printing, with dates on title page and copyright page matching and last page of textblock bearing the numeral one at the end of the text. Large-ish 12mo, green cloth with gilt imprinting on cover and spine and blind-stamped cover illustration of the abode in the story, 324 pp. with last page being in fact numbered with a 1 as noted above, that being Appleton's first-printing designation. A nice copy, with almost no spine fade, moderate corner bumping, front hinge starting, penciled previous owner's names on ffep and front pastedown. Bright gilt and cloth, sturdy feel. A solid Very Good or better. The Fortieth Door, a romance/adventure set in Egypt, was made into a George B. Seitz film of the same name - which has since famously joined the ranks of "lost" films; there are no known extant copies of it. Here - a worthy example of an almost equally rare Bradley first edition - especially so as the first printing. L-28

He loathed the very thought of it. Every flinching nerve in him protested. A masked ball - a masked ball at a Cairo hotel! Grimacing through peep-holes, self-conscious advances, flirtations ending in giggles! Tourists as nuns, tourists as Turks, tourists as God-knows-what, all preening and peacocking! Unhappily he gazed upon the girl who was proposing this horror as a bright delight. She was a very engaging girl - that was the mischief of it. She stood smiling there in the bright, Egyptian sunshine, gay confidence in her gray eyes. He hated to shatter that confidence.
