  • Hans Christian Andersen's Fairy Tales

Erik Christian Haugaard, Hans Christian Andersen, F. Murray Abraham, Edoardo Ballerini, Marisa Calin, Cynthia Darlow, Ari Fliakos, Dion Graham, Michael Bacon - music, Listening Library

Audiobook (Listening Library, March 27, 2018)
Brought to life by Academy Award-winning actor F. Murray Abraham and an ensemble cast of narrators, and featuring original music by Michael Bacon, this collection contains Hans Christian Andersen’s most beloved fairy tales, as well as a selection of lesser-known favorites. Unlike the Brothers Grimm, who collected and retold folklore and fairy tales, Hans Christian Andersen adopted the most ancient literary forms and distilled them into a genre that was uniquely his own. His fairy tales are remarkable for their sense of fantasy, power of description, and vivid imagination. They are like no others written before or since. Recognizing the literary merit of Andersen's own simple colloquial language, Erik Haugaard has remained faithful to the original text in the translation from Danish to English. Listeners will rediscover Hans Christian Andersen's best-known fairy tales, and find new favorites. • Selections from The Fairy Tales of Hans Christian Andersen

Hans Christian Andersen, Bobbie Frohman, Alcazar AudioWorks

Audible Audiobook (Alcazar AudioWorks, June 24, 2013)
Traditional and well-loved fairy tales known to many generations of children. The stories include: "Princess and the Pea" or "The Real Princess," "The Ugly Duckling," "The Emperor's New Suit," "The Fir Tree," "The Happy Family," "The Little Match-seller," "The Little Mermaid," "The Nightingale," "The Pea Blossom," "The Red Shoes," "Thumbelina or Little Tiny," "The Brave Tin Soldier." Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) was a Danish poet, novelist and children's literature legend. Andersen's career as a writer began in the theater. A talent boy soprano, Andersen turned to writing when his voice changed. The first of his published short stories attracted the attention of the King, who then became his sponsor. After success with adult works, Andersen decided to write a series of fairy tales which were initially unpopular in Denmark, but they received enormous attention throughout the rest of Europe, and he published three volumes. Although unlucky in romantic love, Andersen was regarded as a national treasure, and to this day he is loved by millions. In a discussion about the music for his funeral, Andersen said "Most of the people who will walk after me will be children, so make the beat keep time with little steps."
  • Hans Christian Andersen: Fairy Tales

Hans Christian Andersen, Jackie Wullschlager, Tiina Nunnally

Hardcover (Gardners Books, Sept. 30, 2004)
A new selection of 30 tales to mark the 200 year anniversary of Andersen's birth in 2005. Tiina Nunnally's sparkling translation captures the rawness and immediacy of Andersen's style, for the first time enabling English readers to be as startled and amazed as his original readers were, and revealing the unique inventiveness of Andersen's genius. At a time when children's stories were formal, moral and didactic, Hans Christian Andersen revolutionized the genre, giving an anarchic twist to traditional folklore and creating a huge number of utterly original stories that sprang directly from his imagination. From the exuberant early stories such as The Emperor's New Clothes', though poignant masterpieces such as The Little Mermaid' and The Ugly Duckling', to the darker, more subversive later tales written for adults, the stories included here are endlessly experimental, both humorous and irreverent, sorrowful and strange. This book beautifully illustrated with a selection of Andersen's amazing paper cut-outs - will bring these magical tales to life for readers of any age.
