The Anti-Slavery Alphabet, published in the mid-19th century, is an example of literature directed at children with a specific message in mind. Each letter of the alphabet is paired with an anti-slavery word and four-line verse, composed in the hope of teaching children more about the abolitionist movement. The series survives as an important historical text for both students of the American 19th century and students of children’s literature. Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Sept. 9, 2012)
The Anti-Slavery Alphabet is a classic, historical children’s book giving the ABC’s of anti-slavery. Though there are no pictures in this book, it is nicely laid out and the word pictures puts the message across strong and clear. While originally written for children, some explaining would be necessary for children to understand it. The alphabet, written in the form of a poem, reveals something about slavery with each letter. There is much to learn from this short book, which remains a great educational tool about the horrors of slavery.
