  • The ABC Character Builder

    Ollie Marshall

    Paperback (Trafford, Dec. 30, 2016)
THE ABC CHARACTER BUILDER by Ollie Marshall The ABC CHARACTER BUILDER is an educational picture book written to inspire the young reader. The author, Ollie Marshall thinks there is a void in character-building children’s books, and in this work she helps fill the need for positive material that contributes to self-esteem. The letters of the alphabet are accompanied by ideas that will both instill learning and provoke thought. Y is for Yarn, a string of many colors. Y is for youth, who looks for guidance. Y is for you, who looks for light. The ABC Character Builder visually depicts the alphabet through artful illustrations that serve to reinforce the concept of each letter. With the enjoyment of her son, Damon’s illustrations, in 1987, Ollie Marshall wrote the original version with warmth and a truthful simplicity that appears to appeal to the young reader. Parents have and will enjoy this book for its educational benefits and the quality of its content. Illustrated by Frank Scicchitano

  • The Character Building Readers

    Ellen E. Kenyon-Warner

Paperback (Forgotten Books, Feb. 10, 2017)
Excerpt from The Character Building ReadersIT is intended that the child who studies this number of the Character Building series shall have greatly impressed upon him as he proceeds through the book the fact that we in a great measure are responsible for our conduct and its results, good and bad. This may be taught in so many ways and connections, that a greater number of selections than in previous numbers bear directly on the book theme, personal responsibility. In cases where several morals may be drawn from the same piece, teachers may in their questioning gently lead to the conclusion desired and so strengthen the particular trend of growth belonging to this period. A danger exists here, how ever. The moral should not be made too obvious. It should not be reiterated in the same form; in many cases it should not be reduced to form at all. What lies vaguely in the mind for some time while coming slowly to definition, weaves itself more strongly into the mental tissue than that which is subjected prematurely to definition and drill.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. • The Character Building Readers

Hardcover (Forgotten Books, Feb. 4, 2019)
Excerpt from The Character Building ReadersNot all of the pieces are charged with a moral. As in the other numbers of this series (excepting the last), variety is secured by a sprinkling of themes that have no relation to Ethics. The special aims of the first-year course receive some reen forcement in this, and there is also a foreshadowing of what will be more definitely attempted in succeeding numbers. The Method of Teaching is no longer set forth in a Teachers' Edition.Children who have had the powerful Course in Word Study given in the first year's work will find this book easy reading. It is graded to meet the needs of the average class after any good first-year course.Teachers should master the principles Of the Natural Method in Reading, as set forth in the Teachers' Edition for first-year work, and apply them in this and subsequent grades. The first of these is that words are to be regarded as inter esting Objects of study, not as items in a Spelling List. The next is that words are best studied in their relations, not as isolated objects. There are two sets of relations that shed light on words and their content. One is the relations they sustain to other words In context, by which their meanings are modified and by which we are led to choose subconsciously between two pronunciations of the word row or between two spellings of the word rein, rain, etc. The study of words in context must be pursued with great caution not to suggest homonyms unnecessarily, and to lead the thought away from their accidental association by much practice upon one alone until the other is forgotten. The question Which shall I use in this connection? Would never arise if alert teaching could perfectly guard against it, but the occasion would always suggest the correct form alone, and never the two.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
