  • Strong as Death

    Guy de Maupassant

    eBook (E-BOOKARAMA, Sept. 27, 2019)
Like all of Guy de Maupassant's work, "Strong as Death" is a poignant and haunting tale. It is a tale of love, life, death, and the mystery of the human heart; a tale of an affair of the heart that cannot stand the light of day - a profane love that lasts a lifetime, and haunts from beyond the grave."Strong as Death" is great fun and the society portrait works well. The novel focuses on the narcissistic sentimentality in the obsessive romantic love between Olivier Bertin and Madame de Guilleroy.

  • Strong as Death

    Guy de Maupassant

Paperback (Book Jungle, Dec. 4, 2009)
Guy de Maupassant was a popular French writer in the 19th century. He was one of the first writers to write short stories. Many of his stories were set during the Franco-Prussian war. His stories show the futility of war and war's effects on the innocent. Strong as Death is the love story of a lower class painter who is in love with a countess. As she grows older she fears the artist will fall in love with her beautiful daughter. The fear of growing old is timeless. An excerpt reads, "The attraction that impelled him toward this girl a little resembled those obscure yet innocent desires that go to make up part of all the ceaseless and unappeasable vibrations of human nerves. His eye of the artist, as well as that of the man, was captivated by her freshness, by that springing of beautiful clear life, by that essence of youth that glowed in her; and his heart, full of memories of his long intimacy with the Countess, finding in the extraordinary resemblance of Annette to her mother a reawakening of old feelings, of emotions sleeping since the beginning of his love, had been startled perhaps by the sensation of an awakening. An awakening? Yes. Was it that?"

  • Strong as Death

    Guy de Maupassant

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Jan. 18, 2016)
Henri René Albert Guy de Maupassant (5 August 1850 – 6 July 1893) was a popular 19th-century French writer who’s considered one of the fathers of the modern short story and one of the form's best at that. A protégé of Flaubert, Maupassant's stories are economical and efficient, with not a single word wasted. Many of the stories are set during the Franco-Prussian War of the 1870s and several describe the futility of war and the innocent civilians who, caught in the conflict, emerge changed. Although he’s best known for his short stories, Maupassant also wrote six novels, including Bel-Ami, which chronicles journalist Georges Duroy's corrupt rise to power by manipulating a series of powerful, intelligent, and wealthy mistresses. In 2011, Bel Ami headed to the big screen, transformed into a movie starring Robert Pattinson and Uma Thurman.
