  • Song For A Summer Night

    Mark Dennis, Jess Mowry

    eBook (Anubis, May 19, 2016)
Song For A Summer Night is a "children's tale" in the classic tradition, in which a boy -- twelve-year-old Peter Phye -- on the verge of manhood, or at least what most civilized cultures now call adolescence, is granted the power to converse with animals and nature for a short time and embarks upon a difficult and sometimes dangerous quest. Peter's mission for the Queen Of The Night is to bring back the songs of nature, which have mysteriously disappeared. The setting is also classic, a rural environment of shadowy woods, sunny meadows, leafy glades, a pond, a graveyard, and a field with an old abandoned car, all vividly described; the heat of mid-July afternoons, the coolness of mornings and late at night, the clinging damp of a sweaty T-shirt, the rasp of stickers (or "pickers") on bare arms and legs, the sting of mosquito bites, and the razor rake of cat claws. There are villains and friends, human, animal, insect and supernatural; hip-hop blue jays, a gangster raccoon, and devious, drunken bugaboos. Peter has real-world problems, too; an alcoholic mother and a workaholic dad. Song For A Summer Night will also appeal to adults who haven't forgotten the trials, fears, both real and imaginary, and the innocent pleasures of being a kid and living in the moment.

    Mark Dennis

Paperback (Windstorm Creative, July 1, 2008)
When the woodland surrounding Peter's house goes silent one night, troubled thoughts and dreams take hold. No more chirping. No croaking. No buzzing. Not even a cricket. Can there be anything more upsetting than a misplaced sound? Some say the entire growing season may be brought to an equally sudden end. Peter Phye and his only friend, Dillon Hopper, strike out on a mission for the Queen of the Night. Together they begin a quest to restore the music, across the Sea of Queen Anne's Lace to the Deepest Forest, filled with ogres and bugaboos and all the foulest imaginable things, so that when they're done they might set things right again. And when it is done, Peter finds that adventures, just like seasons of green grass and blue skies, are only fleeting. But what he never imagined was he'd find an eternity within that passing moment . . .
