Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, Joyce Crick

Hardcover (Oxford University Press, July 1, 2019)
The tales gathered by the Grimm brothers are at once familiar, fantastic, homely, and frightening. They seem to belong to no time, or to some distant feudal age of fairytale imagining. Grand palaces, humble cottages, and the forest full of menace are their settings; and they are peopled by kings and princesses, witches and robbers, millers and golden birds, stepmothers and talking frogs.Regarded from their inception both as uncozy nursery stories and as raw material for the folklorist the tales were in fact compositions, collected from literate tellers and shaped into a distinctive kind of literature. This translation mirrors the apparent artlessness of the Grimms, and fully represents the range of less well-known fables, morality tales, and comic stories as well as the classic tales. It takes the stories back to their roots in German Romanticism and includes variant stories and tales that were deemed unsuitable for children. In her fascinating introduction, Joyce Crick explores their origins, and their literary evolution at the hands of the Grimms.

  • Snowdrop and Other Tales

    Brothers Grimm

Paperback (Leopold Classic Library, July 23, 2015)
About the Book Fairy tales, wonder tales, magic tales are a folklore genre taking the form of a short story that typically includes magical beings such as dragons, elves, fairies, giants, gnomes, goblins, griffins, mermaids, talking animals, trolls, unicorns, or witches. Generally, magic or enchantments are involved. Fairy tales are distinguished from legends, are mainly derived from European tradition and folk lore, and are generally children's literature. Mythology has a broader and older pedigree than fairy tales, dating back to ancient times in a number of European, African, Middle Eastern and Asian civilizations. Best known among these to Western audiences are Ancient Greek and Old Norse myths and legends. Generally, these myths and legends describe epic quests, journeys and interactions between human adventurers or heroes and god-like deities. Also in this Book A short story collection is a book that contains short stories written by a single author. It is distinguished from an anthology of fiction, which includes stories by more than one author. About us Leopold Classic Library has the goal of making available to readers the classic books that have been out of print for decades. While these books may have occasional imperfections, we consider that only hand checking of every page ensures readable content without poor picture quality, blurred or missing text etc. That's why we: republish only hand checked books; that are high quality; enabling readers to see classic books in original formats; that are unlikely to have missing or blurred pages. • Snowdrop & Other Tales

    Brothers Grimm

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Jan. 16, 2016)
The Brothers Grimm, Jacob (1785-1863) and Wilhelm (1786-1859) were German brothers who remained close friends, and both studied law. While Jacob went on to study philology, Wilhelm wrote. The two of them worked on creating a German dictionary, but it would not be finished until long after they were both dead. The Brothers would be lost to history, except they also collaborated on a collection of 200 fairy tales and published two volumes of them in 1812 and 1814. Although their intention was purely to preserve the material and try to keep the German culture and history alive, their collection proved to be massively popular with young children. The first English translation arrived in 1823, making them a must read for children ever since.
