Why do you get sleepy? When you feel tired, your body is telling you that it needs a rest. Everyone needs sleep. Babies need lots of sleep. Grown-ups need less. But no one can go without sleep for long. A team of scientists stayed awake for as long as they could to see what could happen. Read and find out some wide-eyed facts about the science of shut-eye. This nonfiction picture book is an excellent choice to share during homeschooling, in particular for children ages 4 to 6. • Dance Is for Everyone

    Andrea Zuill

    Hardcover (Sterling Children's Books, April 4, 2017)
Dancing is for EVERYONE. Even a 450-pound alligator! " . . . a sweet, funny celebration of inclusiveness and dedication to dance.” —Horn Book An alligator dancing ballet? When the reptile takes her place at the barre, Mrs. Iraina and her dancers are very surprised. But since they can’t communicate with the alligator—and she is able to follow along—they just decide to name her Tanya and let her stay. (Would YOU say no to a 450-pound alligator?) Mrs. Iraina even creates a special ballet to showcase Tanya’s larger-than-life talents . . . and super-swishy tail. Then, without warning, Tanya disappears. Funny and irreverent, Dance Is for Everyone shows that, with just a little understanding, anyone can fit in—even a dancing alligator. "The illustrations are stylized and quirky, and the plot is engaging, with jokes that adults will appreciate peppered throughout. The narrative conveys the story’s message of inclusion in a subtle manner, but the book’s title makes this important theme abundantly clear. VERDICT A fun read-aloud and a welcome addition to medium and large collections, best shared one-on-one or in a small group setting.” —School Library Journal

  • Sleep Is for Everyone

    Paul Showers

    Hardcover (UNSPECIFIED VENDOR, )
This is a brilliant book. I purchased it when my 2.5 year old son was refusing to sleep to try to explain to him that everyone sleeps, and why everyone sleeps. I could relate the facts in the book to things he understood, including when Caroline (a character in the book) goes to sleep and how she gets cranky when she doesn't get her nap. Thereafter he would say he needed his sleep so that he wasnt cranky like Caroline! He loves reading the book before nap and bed time - and the last few pages about drifting off to sleep help him unwind and relax ready for his own sleep. I also learnt a few things from this book - who knew that chickens eyelids go up, or that snakes have no eyelids!
