  • Saved at Sea - A Lighthouse Story

    Mrs O. F. Walton

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Nov. 2, 2017)
Saved at Sea is a classic work of children's fiction, telling a simple but very moving tale of a young child's rescue at sea and return her to her home. Alick, the young grandson and his grandfather Sandy Fergusson work as a team in the family lighthouse. They light the lamps leading to and within the lighthouse, which is situated on a small, craggy island. Although their existence is peaceful, the calm is occasionally shattered by the force of a violent storm, the effects of which they bear witness. Well acquainted with the awesome power of the seas, the characters depicted in this story one day rescue a young girl from a ship which is dashed against the rocks during a storm. There is good fortune to her rescue - the vessel collided with rocks close to the lighthouse itself, and we realize that she might easily have perished. Taking her into their care while her family is searched for, the grandson and grandfather reflect on the event. The girl's eventual safe delivery to land has a great impact on all their lives; together, they feel that the event is a sign of salvation from God. This awakening of sorts leads the characters to value their lives all the more; symbolically, they feel that their spiritual foundation must be as a lighthouse - built upon the solid rock of Christ.

  • Saved at Sea: A Lighthouse Story

    O. F. Walton

Paperback (Dodo Press, Dec. 14, 2007)
Amy Catherine Walton (1849-1939), better known as Mrs. O. F. Walton, was a British author of Christian children's and teenage books, mainly but not exclusively fiction. Her career as an author of children's books began in 1870 with My Mates and I, followed by at least two others. Then in 1874 came one of her best known books, Christie's Old Organ, which has been regularly reprinted up to the present day. It is the story of orphaned Christie and his friend the aged organ-grinder Treffy. Although she wrote many more books, it is A Peep Behind the Scenes and Christie's Old Organ which have remained well known, continuing to be published by the Lutterworth Press, successor to her original publisher, the Religious Tract Society, until at least the late 20th century, and later available from other publishers, along with occasional reprints of a few of her other works, such as Saved at Sea (1879), to the present day. Her other works include Christie, The King's Servant (1898) and The King's Cup-Bearer (1891).
