The first important spy for the Confederacy during the American Civil War was Rose O'Neal Greenhow. From a free endpaper in the book: "Years before the Civil War erupted, Rose Greenhow was a witty and charming favorite of Washington Society. Government officials were frequently entertained at her home. Once the nation was at war, Rose Greenhow continued to entertain officials of the Union, and gleaned from them valuable information for the Confederate command. She devised a spy ring and courier service which continued to function even after she was arrested and confined." This volume from Spies of the World series by G. P Putnam's Sons is especially helpful. Faber has provided A Note on Sources for further study, as well as a detailed Index (2.5 pages) which is always a plus. The biography takes the reader from 12 year-old Rose O'Neal to the tragic end of her life as she returned from England, full of patriotic fervor and weighed down with gold.
