This book is set just before America's second war with England, in 1812. Kye Devon, who grew up in a clearing hacked out of the Tennessee forests by pioneers building a new nation, was making his own way in the world, when most boys were still keeping close to their parents' cabins. Through a series of events he got to know Andrew Jackson and became an express-courier to the Presedent of the United States. Thus it was that Kye became a first-hand observer of the conflict brewing between his beloved country and England, and learned the meaning of true patriotism...

This is a reproduction of a book published before 1923. "Help! Help!" This call for assistance came from a small house, poorly constructed by those who had little skill in the art of carpentry. It stood near the Spring Road, in a field of about ten acres of land, under cultivation, though the rank weeds among the useful plants indicated that it had been sorely neglected. Those familiar with the locality would have recognized it as the abode of one of those small farmers found all over the country, who were struggling to improve their worldly condition on a very insufficient capital. The house was hardly finished, and the want of skill was apparent in its erection from sill to ridgepole.

Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.
