The painting sits on a tiled wall in the train station in Silver Creek. It isn’t pretty, and few people ever stop to look at it, nor do they suspect the painting is actually one-half of a doorway into another world. Only one person has ever passed through the doorway - a boy named Daniel Striker. But that happened nearly sixty years ago, and the boy has yet to return. Now, it's summer break and brother and sister, Zack and Zaria, are taking a train to Silver Creek to visit their grandfather on his farm. The farm is a magical place, especially for eight-year old Zaria who can communicate with animals. At twelve, Zack prefers science to magic and is intrigued by the painting, particularly when the dark shapes painted there begin to move. On the other side of the painting is Almeria, where the animals can speak but have forgotten their ancient abilities to connect more deeply with each other and their land. Now, the land is dying, and it’s up to Zack and Zaria to figure out why. To do so, they’ll have to cross the wild lands and face the ruthless Alpha Canine. Though the journey is dangerous, they’re not alone on their quest. With the help of a stallion named Elliott, a wise crow, the Canine Queen and an unlikely spy, they’ll navigate the dangers, only to find that the White Magician who sent for them is not who they expected.
