  • What You Know First

    Patricia MacLachlan, Barry Moser

    Paperback (HarperCollins, Feb. 14, 1998)
The stunning picture book collaboration between Newbery Medal–winning author Patricia MacLachlan and acclaimed illustrator Barry Moser.A young girl comes to terms with the fact that she and her family are leaving the prairie. As she talks herself into acceptance, her Mama helps her let go, commenting that the baby will need someone to tell him where he came from. So the girl gathers mementos—a bag of earth and a piece of cottonwood tree.“As with Sarah, Plain and Tall, the subtext vibrates. So much is told in each perfectly chosen phrase. The story is deep and specific, but the pain and denial of a child leaving a known and loved place is all too universal. Moser’s finely-wrought engravings, enhanced by moody tints, record the departure.”—School Library Journal 1995 American Bookseller Association Pick of the Lists

  • DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE EATING?

    Kiwami Takao

    language (, May 28, 2019)
DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE EATING? is a fully illustrated 30-page children's book, perfect for readers from Kinder to lower graders and surely for older children, parents, and educators, too. It will help younger children to understand the environmental emergency of what "Plastic Wastes" do and encourage them to refuse and reduce plastics. In this book, the story goes backwards, the food loving boy, Judson, leads and approaches children through what he finds out about food from grocery bags. What's so different about this book is that the story's focus isn't about asking children to be sympathetic towards poor creatures dying by pollution caused by human, nor be ethical in global humanity issues. From my about 20 years of experiences being an environmentalist, I realized that this type of approach doesn't appeal to all, because it is not their problem what so ever. This book is all about "you". Pollution causing "human" is you. The "poor creature" is you. The "suffering person" is you.The story ends with questioning children. There's no DON'Ts list. Let them think what they can do, and let them actually do what they want to do. They would come up with variety of interesting ideas. Lastly take a look at the back cover of the book. Children can visit website anytime to check if their ideas were great or to find out more about what they can do.
