The story depicts the lifestyle difference between the rural southern England and the rich industrial people of North England. Margarets finds his town smoky and poverty stricken and then she meets with thornton an Industrialist of North England. She spends time with him and gradually she starts appreciating the city hard working people, Meanwhile Thornton gets attracted to the beauty of margarets and proposes her for marriage but she declines. Then the story revolves around both character and industry strikes which take place meanwhile. The story is full of romantic drama and comedy in between. It shows the change of mind and attitude of a person and finally accepts the truth with facts.

Along with Wives and Daughters (1865) and Cranford (1853), it is one of her best known novels and has been adapted for television twice, in 1975 and 2004. The latter version renewed interest in the novel and gained it a wider audience. Whereas Gaskell's first novel Mary Barton (1848) views relations between employers and workers from the perspective of the working poor, North and South is more balanced, focusing as well on the thinking of the employers.
