  • Night-Time

    Eileen Pettigrew, William Kimber

Paperback (Annick Press, Sept. 1, 1992)
This is an unusual bed time story, featuring a father and his son. Michael, who is four, likes to keep his bedroom door open at night, "just so I can hear you talking downstairs." His father is not the kind who will say, "Don't be silly. There's nothing to worry about." Instead, he takes Michael, in pajamas and boots, on a night-time walk around a familiar neighborhood. Michael points to ant hills in the yard, and his father shows Michael where the old barn used to be, where his Dad took him once in the middle of the night to welcome a new-born calf. Maybe tomorrow Michael will sleep with his bedroom door closed.

October 1936. Spanish architect Ignacio Abel arrives at Penn Station, the final stop on his journey from war-torn Madrid, where he has left behind his wife and children, abandoning them to uncertainty.
