Paperback (Fitzhenry and Whiteside, March 1, 1998)
Suffragette, reformer, legislator, and author Nellie McClung was Canada's most famous pioneer for woman's rights. But how did a girl growing up in the late 1800s become such an advocate for equality? In this second book in the series, Nellie - now a young schoolteacher - struggles to overcome her mother's criticism and the prejudices of those around her. Her thoughts and ideas on women's rights and the role of the family begin to take shape as she attempts to help Sarah, a young student in distress, and begins to develop romantic feeling for Wes, a lifelong family friend.

  • Nettie's Quest

    Clare Mishica

language (Any Subject Books, July 28, 2014)
AN ADVENTURE STORY IN THE BEST AND TRUEST TRADITION - A middle grade novella by a winner of the 2014 Highlights for Children Fiction contest'Nettie's Quest' begins when a young bat is shunned by her colony and sets off on a journey of discovery and self-realization.Humans are dangerous, cats are dangerous, owls are dangerous, but she saves a deer from hunters and a bullfrog gives her instructions on how to swim. The author constantly challenges us to realize just how different Nettie's world is from our own even though we have the same surroundings.Nettie would not be a bad friend to have if you were to be her size and enter her world because she has a supremely likeable personality. She is well-meaning, sweet and kind, and yet despite this (maybe also because of this) she is victimized by the bat colony leader and arch-bully, Cleo.Weber, the great shaggy dog Nettie is striving to bring home in order to complete Cleo's challenge, is a gruff 'heart of gold' creature of few words that the author has been at pains to make real. In fact all the characters, animal or human, are ready to jump off the page.Ever present, at the end of Nettie's quest, is the image of the little boy who wished on a star that he could have a dog. Sometimes it seems just impossible that Nettie and Weber will actually reach him.
