  • Fairy Tales

Kate Reading, Richard Matthews, Hans Christian Andersen, Penguin Audio

Audible Audiobook (Penguin Audio, March 25, 2005)
A gawky, dreamy boy, Hans Christian Andersen grew up to become a profoundly imaginative writer and storyteller who revolutionized literature for children. Andersen gave us the now standard versions of some traditional folk tales, but many of his most famous tales sprang directly from his imagination and continue to resonate with today's readers. The stories here range from exuberant early works such as "The Tinderbox" and "The Emperor's New Clothes", through poignant masterpieces such as "The Little Mermaid" and "The Ugly Duckling", to powerful and more subversive later tales written for adults, such as "The Ice Maiden" and "The Wood Nymph". Tiina Nunnally's sparkling new translation of 30 of his extraordinary tales captures the vibrancy of Andersen's voice and will dazzle listeners young and old.

    Hermann Hesse

eBook (El Sheikh, April 15, 2016)
Hermann Hesse's Fairy Tales (Märchen) is a collection of seven short philosophical fictions written between 1913 and 1918, prior to and during the First World War. The collection was first published in German in 1919. In these philosophical fictions, Hesse challenged conventional intellectual life and the orthodoxy of the world. Unlike his earlier work, the stories did not lend themselves to rational interpretation, they were essentially fairy tales dealing with dream worlds, the subconscious and the realm of magic. The stories, with the year in which they were written, are: "Augustus – 1913”, "The Poet – 1913”, "Strange News from Another Star – 1915”, "A Difficult Path - 1917”, "Fine Dream Sequence – 1916”, "Faldum - 1916" and "Iris 1918”.

  • Fairy Tales

    E. E. Cummings, Meilo So

    Hardcover (Liveright, Nov. 17, 2004)
These whimsical, timeless tales, by one of our most treasured poets, will appeal to any generation. The four tales in this enchanting, newly illustrated volume, tell of lonely and extraordinary characters finding friendship in unlikely companions. In "The Old Man Who Said Why" a wise fairy's kind nature is taxed when one old man's questions throw the entire heavens into madness. In "The Elephant and the Butterfly" and "The House That Ate Mosquito Pie" shyness is overcome by the compelling love of new friends. "The Little Girl Named I" is a conversation between the author and a small girl, in the manner of A. A. Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh. Clever, insightful, and magical, peopled with vivid characters―a house that prefers one bird to any human inhabitants, an elephant paralyzed with delight, a fairy who "always breakfasted on light and silence"here are tales as only Cummings could write them. A delightful and surprising gift for anyone, young or old. 21 color watercolors
