  • Marbles

    Vikka Burin

    language (, March 5, 2020)
Marbles tumble through my fingers, cool and smooth, clicking as they settle into the basin. I choose one and hold it to the light, a tiny, sparkling world; milky waves and streams of iridescent bubbles form a delicate landscape. The smallest marbles, each the size of a new pea, a kaleidoscope of transparent greens: emerald, jade, turquoise and peridot. The mid-range marbles are the color of honey. Others have sunsets---ribbons of red and orange swirling in lavender globes. The largest, heavy shooters, were once clear but are now frosted and pitted from use. All these marbles my father and his brothers fought over and prized.
