eBook (GIA Publications, Feb. 1, 2019)
Kitty Alone is the latest in a series of captivating picture books, each based on a beloved songtale from the great American folk music heritage. This beautifully illustrated version was conceived by illustrator Mina Echevarria, who suggested setting the song in the Appalachian Mountains and using a bobcat as the title character. Since they are rarely seen in the daytime, Appalachian locals refer to the bobcat as the "woods ghost." Here the illustrations create the ghostly bobcat in the evening darkness of the forest encountering several delightful friends. Also notice the red thread that appears throughout. Like the other picture books in the First Steps in Music series, Kitty Alone includes a description of the history of the song, the notation of the song, and a link to download the song, sung by Jill Trinka, at no cost.

Sabine Baring-Gould weaves a tale of rural life - life lived by curious characters glued together by a lovable protagonist bearing the name of Kate Quarm. Kate is a smart and delicate girl who lives with her uncle and aunt in a farmhouse settled in the south of Devon. Baring exposes a countryside that has all but vanished from our collective mind and manages to inhabit the estuary of Teign with well-written people from the far off era of 19th century England. Kate has landed in quite a predicament thanks to her way too optimistic father, who always vanishes with his donkey cart on the trail to another shoddy get-rich opportunity. With her father out of the picture, Kitty is no more understood by her relatives than anyone around her so she is, in fact, very alone. Yet light is shining yonder, as a young man from across the Teign catches her eye. And he is the son of the wealthiest farmer in the land. All might think that Kitty Alone will revert to Kate and hurry herself to a happy ending. Too bad that Rose Ash fancies the farmer's son too - and is not shy to fight back. Now what will Kitty Alone do? Her obstacles will be considerable, as Baring's countryside is full of characters that are keen on not giving Kitty a break. But Kitty's problem will not stop there, as she will have to deal with... herself. Being her father's daughter speaks volumes when it comes to being a dreamer, and that new schoolmaster does not help either. A book that is subtle and at times very humorous, Kitty Alone depicts a time where it was easy to dream and, at the same time, shows us how the community is not always there for you.
