  • Justice

    Michael J. Sandel, Macmillan Audio

Audible Audiobook (Macmillan Audio, Sept. 15, 2009)
What are our obligations to others as people in a free society? Should government tax the rich to help the poor? Is the free market fair? Is it sometimes wrong to tell the truth? Is killing sometimes morally required? Is it possible, or desirable, to legislate morality? Do individual rights and the common good conflict? These questions are at the core of our public life today - and at the heart of Justice, in which Michael J. Sandel shows how a surer grasp of philosophy can help us to make sense of politics, morality, and our own convictions as well. Sandel's legendary Justice course is one of the most popular and influential at Harvard. Up to a thousand students pack the campus theater to hear Sandel relate the big questions of political philosophy to the most vexing issues of the day. In the fall of 2009, PBS will air a series based on the course. Justice offers listeners the same exhilarating journey that captivates Harvard students - the challenge of thinking our way through the hard moral challenges we confront as citizens. It is a searching, lyrical exploration of the meaning of justice, a book that invites readers of all political persuasions to consider familiar controversies in fresh and illuminating ways. Affirmative action, same-sex marriage, physician-assisted suicide, abortion, national service, the moral limits of markets, patriotism and dissent - Sandel shows how even the most hotly contested issues can be illuminated by reasoned moral argument.Justice is lively, thought-provoking, and wise - an essential new addition to the small shelf of books that speak convincingly to the big questions of our civic life.
  • JET - Justice:

    Russell Blake

eBook (Reprobatio, Ltd., Jan. 14, 2014)
JET - Justice continues the saga of the former Mossad operative as she battles to survive in a world intent on destroying her. From the streets of Argentina to the corridors of power in Moscow, her past continues to haunt her even as she flees it with all her heart. This is the sixth novel in the JET series. +++Q&A with Russell BlakeQ: A sixth installment in your bestselling JET series. What's in store for her this time?RB: Without giving away the plot, let's just say that no good deed goes unpunished, as is often the case in real life. I envisioned a story where a set of small events quickly spiral out of control, resulting in the usual mayhem and danger that fans of the series have come to expect.Q: How does JET - Justice differ from earlier episodes?RB: I wrote this one so that it really takes place over a period of 36 hours. I originally was shooting for 24 hours, but decided to stretch it some for plotting purposes. As such, it's a breakneck pace, where a lot happens in very little time. I also wanted to delve deeper into Jet's life in her new home, so that the dislocation when the poop hits the fan is even more jarring. I'm happy with the way it turned out, and think it works nicely.Q: How much more do you see in the JET saga?RB: You know, I originally envisioned this as four novels. Now it's six. And I already have two ideas for a continuation, so I think it's safe to say there will be at least one more. After that? Who knows. I really sort of want her to find peace in the end, but it doesn't seem in the stars quite yet.

  • Faint Justice

    David Drake, Tom Gnagey

language (Family of Man Press, July 5, 2018)
1947. Small town, Midwest. Fifteen-year-old Pete’s father is the local, well-respected, prosecuting attorney by day and an alcohol induced abusive father by night. The boy has turned elsewhere for adult, male, companionship. He found it in a cabin in the woods in the form of a sage, reclusive, handyman, his father’s age. For some, unspoken reason, his father disapproves. Pete sees his role at home as protecting his mother and handicapped sister, thinking if he weren’t there, they would become his father’s targets. As a school project, Pete researches the recent history of Mason Crossing – his small town – and discovers secrets that turn his world upside down. He presents his findings in a school report that will destroy his father. The novel is a no-holds-barred study of raw emotions, swaddled in hate, love, and the seemingly unresolvable angst of adolescence. A weak mother, a best friend, and a budding romance help Pete put his life into perspective. (To properly tell the story, the depiction of violence was necessary. Intended for adults and young adults).
