DU SABLE THE FATHER OF CHICAGOWhat does that mean?It means that a young black man left his home country in the mid 1700s to follow his dream of adventure. He traveled by ship to the New World, an America that was struggling to exist, as he was struggling to exist. Through set backs, challenges, successes and wide experiences, he established his trading post on the gateway connecting the Gulf of Mexico to the Great Lakes. Within that time, he survived a ship wreck coming to the New World, was nearly sold as a slave in New Orleans, prospered in St. Louis, found love with the Indians in Michigan and was feared and captured by the British during the Revolutionary War. When the war ended, he returned to his trading post where it thrived and he grew in prominence. His contribution was the roots he established for a major city of the world - CHICAGO.
