  • Horace The Hopper

eBook (Kris Gilbert Tufts, Jan. 16, 2016)
Horace is a grasshopper who thinks he's the best hopper in the world, until a stranger shows up who says HE'S the best hopper.Note: In 1953 a newly married young couple (my parents) decided to produce a series of illustrated children's books. My father, a part-time artist, and my mother, who was all of 16 years old at the time, ultimately created four books. When my father passed away in 2000, I found these long-forgotten manuscripts in a box of his belongings. One book was lost, never to be found. I decided to take the three remaining books and self-publish them through Kindle, a technological miracle that my parents could never have imagined in 1953. Rather than use technology to clean up these 60+ year old pages, I chose to scan them exactly as they are, showing old paper clip marks where the text was attached and other marks of over half a century of being stored away. The story was by my mother, the art handpainted in watercolors by my father. I've added the text using modern means and made slight revisions to the text, mainly for grammatical reasons, but other than that they are as they were in July of 1953.

As Paw Paw tends to his grandson's scraped-up knee, he tries to distract nine-year-old David by telling a story about a seal and his special mission to save his family. A group of gray seals lived down south in Antarctica on a glacier where they had everything they needed: food, shelter, companionship, and company. But, unfortunately, things were about to change for the gray seals. The glacier was breaking apart and the seals needed to swim to the big island, but they feared being overtaken by the great white sharks. The seals' salvation came from an unlikely source; Horace! Through rhyme and colorful illustrations, Horace the Seal shares an important story about family, teamwork, and courage. Book Lexile® Score: 670L
