The Cooperative Admissions Examination Program (COOP) and the High School Placement Test (HSPT) are two of the most common tests required for admission to many Catholic High Schools. The COOP consists of 10 units testing students in mathematics, reading and comprehension, vocabulary, grammar and spelling. It is given each year in October or November to eighth-graders seeking admission to specific Catholic high schools within the Archdiocese of Newark and Paterson, New Jersey. The HSPT, offered to schools nationwide by the Scholastic Testing Service, consists of 298 multiple choice questions and takes about 2 and a half hours to complete. The test covers qualitative and quantitative areas, along with reading, mathematics and language. Offered at various times through the year, depending on where you are applying, the HSPT is most commonly administered in the fall and spring.
