White pines have long been my favourite tree-they are compelling, beautiful, and strong. While tethered to the earth, it also seems as if they could break loose at any moment and soar. This story was inspired by a recent visit to the Big Pines Trail at Algonquin Park in Ontario, Canada. My husband and I were struck by both the grandeur of the big pines and the rich history. I finally put pen to paper, and my husband painted the picture on the back cover. I did want to present this more as a children's book and was fortunate to work with Harriet Kim Anh Rodis, a graphic illustrator from the Philippines.
