Graustark is a fictional country in Eastern Europe used as a setting for several novels by George Barr McCutcheon. Graustark's neighbors, which also figure into the stories, are Axphain to the north and Dawsbergen to the south. "Graustark is a mountainous country with an area of approximately 800 square miles (2,100 km2); there is at least one reference in the books that fixes its location as somewhere in the Carpathian Mountains near Romania. " The meeting of the Princess of Graustark with the hero, while traveling incognito in this country, his efforts to find her, his success, and defeat of conspiracies to dethrone her and their happy marriage provide entertainment which every type of ready will enjoy" (from back of the book)

The fiction of George Barr McCutcheon (1866-1928) proved so popular in his day that he, along with Anthony Hope, the author of _The Prisoner of Zenda,_ invented a whole new genre, now called the "Graustarkian novel," a charming product of a more innocent time when the Balkans could be the scene of adventurous romances set in imaginary countries. McCutcheon's Graustark no doubt borders Hope's Ruritania and Avram Davidson's more recent Scythia-Pannonia-Transbalkania. It was a place where an American adventurer could find himself or herself adrift, but rapidly caught up in intrigues, captures and escapes, and the perilously-hinged destiny of (at the very least) a royal throne or two. _Graustark_ is one entry in this best-selling series, which also includes _The Prince of Graustark_, Truxton King, and _Beverly of Graustark_.
