The last or sixth edition of my Elements of Geology was already out of print before the end of 1868, in which year I brought out the tenth edition of my Principles of Geology. In writing the last-mentioned work I had been called upon to pass in review almost all the leading points of speculation and controversy to which the rapid advance of the science had given rise, and when I proposed to bring out a new edition of theE lements I was strongly urged by my friends not to repeat these theoretical discussions, but to confine myself in the new treatise to those parts of theE lements which were most indispensable to a beginner. This was to revert, to a certain extent, to the original plan of the first edition; but I found, after omitting a great number of subjects, that the necessity of bringing up to the day those which remained, and adverting, however briefly, to new discoveries, made it most difliicult to confine the proposed abridgment within moderate limits. Some chapters had to be entirely recast, some additional illustrations to be introduced, and figures of some organic remains to be replaced by new ones from specimens more perfect than those which had been at my command on former occasions. By these changes the work assumed a form so different from the sixth edition of theE lements, that I resolved to give it a new title and call it theS tudent sE lements of Geology. Excerpt from Elements of GeologyThe meaning and scope of geology. - Geology has to do with the history of the earth and of its inhabitants. Its field is so broad that for the sake Of convenience and specialized study it has been divided into numerous branches. Geology is concerned with the different members of the solar system and with other heavenly bodies in so far as they yield evidence as to the origin of the earth, or affect the activities now in progress upon it. This division of the general subject is some times called Astronom'ic Geology, and is related closely to the science of Astronomy. The processes and agents at work changing the earth must be studied carefully by the geologist, for they are shaping the present chapter in the history of the earth, and an understanding of them affords also a key by which much of its earlier history, recorded in the rocks, may be read. This phase of the subject is Dynamic Geology, and it has common ground with the special science of Physi ography or Physical Geography, with Meteorology, the science of the atmosphere, and with other sciences. The study of the remains and impressions 'of the plants and animals of past ages that are found in the' rocks is Paleontology; it is really the historical side of Botany and Zoology. Structural Geol ogy is concerned with the arrangement of the materials of the earth. That branch of geology which deals with minerals is Mineralogy, that which studies rocks is Petrology; both are connected closely with Chemistry.
