Florence Kelley was an American social reformer of early twentieth century who was instrumental in developing labour legislation in the country, both on state and federal levels. A significant aspect of her labour initiatives had to do with the rights of children and the struggle to improve their living and working conditions. Her efforts contributed greatly to the creation of the USA Children’s Bureau in 1912. Along with labour reforms, Kelley was also a pioneer of consumer rights. She headed the National Consumers’ League for 34 years and it was largely thanks to her stewardship that there were more than sixty local and state Consumer Leagues in the country by the time she died in 1932.
