  • Elements of Geology

    Eliot Blackwelder

Paperback (Forgotten Books, July 5, 2017)
Excerpt from Elements of GeologyThe meaning and scope of geology. - Geology has to do with the history of the earth and of its inhabitants. Its field is so broad that for the sake Of convenience and specialized study it has been divided into numerous branches. Geology is concerned with the different members of the solar system and with other heavenly bodies in so far as they yield evidence as to the origin of the earth, or affect the activities now in progress upon it. This division of the general subject is some times called Astronom'ic Geology, and is related closely to the science of Astronomy. The processes and agents at work changing the earth must be studied carefully by the geologist, for they are shaping the present chapter in the history of the earth, and an understanding of them affords also a key by which much of its earlier history, recorded in the rocks, may be read. This phase of the subject is Dynamic Geology, and it has common ground with the special science of Physi ography or Physical Geography, with Meteorology, the science of the atmosphere, and with other sciences. The study of the remains and impressions 'of the plants and animals of past ages that are found in the' rocks is Paleontology; it is really the historical side of Botany and Zoology. Structural Geol ogy is concerned with the arrangement of the materials of the earth. That branch of geology which deals with minerals is Mineralogy, that which studies rocks is Petrology; both are connected closely with Chemistry. There are still other divisions of geology, but the ones mentioned are chief, and.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Paperback (Forgotten Books, June 9, 2012)
The last or sixth edition of my Elements of Geology was already out of print before the end of 1868, in which year I brought out the tenth edition of my Principles of Geology. In writing the last-mentioned work I had been called upon to pass in review almost all the leading points of speculation and controversy to which the rapid advance of the science had given rise, and when I proposed to bring out a new edition of theE lements I was strongly urged by my friends not to repeat these theoretical discussions, but to confine myself in the new treatise to those parts of theE lements which were most indispensable to a beginner. This was to revert, to a certain extent, to the original plan of the first edition; but I found, after omitting a great number of subjects, that the necessity of bringing up to the day those which remained, and adverting, however briefly, to new discoveries, made it most difliicult to confine the proposed abridgment within moderate limits. Some chapters had to be entirely recast, some additional illustrations to be introduced, and figures of some organic remains to be replaced by new ones from specimens more perfect than those which had been at my command on former occasions. By these changes the work assumed a form so different from the sixth edition of theE lements, that I resolved to give it a new title and call it theS tudent sE lements of Geology. In executing this task I have found it very difficult to meet the requirements of those who are entirely ignorant of the science.(Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.)About the Publisher Forgotten Books is a publisher of historical writings, such as: Philosophy, Classics, Science, Religion, History, Folklore and Mythology.Forgotten Books' Classic Reprint Series utilizes the latest technology to regenerate facsimiles of historically important writings. Excerpt from Elements of ZoologyWe know that a bird eats, moves, and breathes, and that its blood circulates; but plants also eat, respire through their leaves, have a circulation of sap, and some are endowed with locomotive powers. When we descend to the lower forms of animal and vegetable life, the points of similarity become almost identical; the swift-mov ing diatom so resembling some of the lowest animal forms that it is well-nigh impossible to distinguish be tween them. The plants, however, have no nervous sys tem, no special organs Of circulation or digestion that characterize the majority of animal forms, so that an ani mal differs mainly from a plant in possessing, as a rule, a nervous system and special organs of Circulation and digestion.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. • Elements of Geometry

    George Albert Wentworth

Paperback (Forgotten Books, June 13, 2012)
Most persons do not possess, and do not easily acquire, the power of abstraction requisite for apprehending the Geometrical conceptions, and for keeping in mind the successive steps of a continuous argument. Hence, with a very large proportion of beginners in Geometry, it depends mainly upon the form in which the subject is presented whether they pursue the study with indifference, not to say aversion, or with increasing interest and pleasure. In compiling the present treatise, this fact has been kept constantly in view. All unnecessary discussions and scholia have been avoided; and such methods have been adopted as experience and attentive observation, confined with repeated trials, have shown to be most readily comprehended. No attempt has been made to render more intelligible the simple notions of position, magnitude, and direction, which every child derives from observation; but it is believed that these notions have been limited and defined with mathematical precision. A few symbols, -which stand for words and not for operations, have been used, but these are of so great utility in giving style and perspicuity to the demonstrations that no apology seems necessary for their introduction. Great pains have been taken to make the page attractive. The figures are large and distinct, and are placed in the middle of the page, so that they fall directly under the eye in immediate connection with the corresponding text.(Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.)About the Publisher Forgotten Books is a publisher of historical writings, such as: Philosophy, Classics, Science, Religion, History, Folklore and Mythology.Forgotten Books' Classic Reprint Series utilizes the latest technology to regenerate facsimiles of historically important writings.
