Drop 8-1 is based upon the real life story of Jake Michaelson, a small town boy, swept from a Mid Western University into the Air Force during the height of the cold war and is assigned to the National Security Agency. He loses his best friend and mentor in an ambush by Spetnaz troops on the shores of the Black Sea. Reassignment brings him into the dark world of covert operations where he learns the seamy and sometimes dangerous side of intelligence collection. He is given a temporary duty assignment (TDY) to Thailand and a reconnaissance squadron. His aircraft is shot down by North Vietnamese anti Aircraft guns over Laos. He and some of his crew are forced to walk through the jungle to the Thai border, relentlessly pursued by NVA troops trained to capture downed flyers.When he returns to the States he finds that much of the country has abandoned the cause he gave up so much to protect. Coming home proves as challenging as survival in the Laotian jungles.
