Bertie is a large and friendless fifteen year old whose on;y friend is jenny. He lives with his parents on a diet of Banger, Beans and Chips. Their enemy is Shuggy and his gang who are always looking for them to beat them up. They escape to the old Abbey at the top of the hill that had been sealed off for hundreds of years. Bertie discovers that he has the magical power to enter the Abbey and opens the door to be met by a bad tempered little red dragon whose breath sets fire to Bertie's jeans. Shuggy also manages to get through the door. They are taken to meet the Abbot who sets them tests to check their magical powers. Bertie, Jenny and Shuggy are allowed to stay and to learn to be wizards and witches. Bertie is hown to have the potential for great power and is one of the few who can see dragons all the time. Little red dragons are scorned by all because they are small and stupid - although very loving. Bertie is kind to a red dragon who immediately adopts him, much to the horror of the other students. All red dragons are called Sydney which causes great confusion. The three are sent back to their own town to wait for the start of the new term when they will start as students in magic, bu they sadly let out a wicked little god called Meera - a little god of time. She alters time for them and they have to flee back to the Abbey for safety. Bertie's power makes enemies and he soon has collected a number of challenges to fight from other students. Hamish, his room mate protects him and takes him down to the hidden depths below the Abbey where the great dragons were kept. It is the hope of all students to bond with a great dragon. Bertie and Jenny are tasked with getting Meera back into the Abbey before she does to much damage changing time. Meera can disguise herself and likes to show up as a huge and cruel dragon. Before they are sent back to our world, they are taught fly using the magic flying boards which are like surfboards that fly. Bertie is given an old board that looks like a child's three wheeler. Despite this, he comes second in the great end of term race. The winner is allowed to fly on the back of the Emerald Queen Dragon. When the Emerald arrives, however, she chooses Bertie to fly with her, naming him DRAGON FRIEND for life. The next book descibes Bertie and Jenny as they fight the wicked Meera to save their town.
