Not wishing to write to his children of the brutality of the war, he wrote imaginative letters that were the foundation of the Doctor Dolittle novels.

Then, leaving the dogs behind, Dr. Dolittle becomes obsessed with learning the language of insects, so he invents a machine for this and, eventually, manages to learn several stories about insects. Dr. Doolittle hears rumors of giant moths, so he asks his animal friends and insects to learn more about them. Then, quite unexpectedly, a giant moth appears in his garden and he learn to communicate with them.
