Mary Jane Holmes, Lucy Booker Roper

    eBook (, Nov. 29, 2017)
Mary Jane Holmes was well known in her time and was second only to her contemporary Harriet Beecher Stowe in sales of books. During her lifetime she sold over two million books. But as the twentieth century came into being, critics categorized Holmes’ and other women authors’ work as “sentimental” and downplayed it because of appeal to the average reader. Her books usually employ a female protagonist, and although written in a style that may seem old fashioned today, she spoke of many of the issues and concerns faced by women of her day. Current literary scholars have come to value how Holmes dealt seriously with matters of gender, race, and class, and her work is enjoying a revival. “The secret of Mary Jane Holmes’ favor with a large class of readers was probably that her stories “went” from first to last. Her characters were always in action working out the climax which in every case rewarded the good and punished the wrongdoer. The elemental principles of love and hate, of right and wrong, of weal and woe, were on the stage from first to last. And she was never coarse. Readers today are asking for the works of Mary Jane Holmes. These Christmas Stories will not disappoint.” (Libraries: A Monthly Review of Library Matters and Methods, Volume 12, page 252).
