The author Dr. Nila Banton Smith is considered one of the foremost authorities in the field of reading. Dr. Smith began her career as a teacher of reading in northern Michigan and became Supervisor of Reading in the Detroit schools. She served as Professor of Education and Director of the Reading Institute of New York University. Dr. Smith, past president of the International Reading Association, received a citation of merit from that organization. The Nila Banton Smith Reading Council in Michigan was named for her, and the Nila Banton Smith Historical Collection in Reading at Hofstra University was established in her honor.
