Billy's great, great, great Uncle Albert is a very strange guy. For one thing, he's old. In fact, to Billy, he completely redefines old, with wrinkles on his wrinkles! When he comes to visit, he mixes his stories with magic and old fashioned horse sense and enchants the entire family. Two years later, Billy's life has changed. He's a sixth grader and student council president. One day, he takes some paperwork to the office for his teacher and the secretary points toward the principal and asks him, "So what do you think we should do, Billy?" When he looks into the office, he can see Mr. Johnson, a man just a little younger than Uncle Albert, singing, break dancing, doing back flips, and walking on his hands about the office. Then the man flips up to his feet, looks at Billy, smiles, and says, "Hey Billy, I'm going to be gone for a couple of days. Why don't you take over." And then, just like that, he waltzes out the door, leaving Billy Rader, a sixth grader and student council president, as principal. This story is compiled of experiences I had as a school teacher and principal. Every one of the problems Billy has as principal is true, if in some cases, a little bit exaggerated. Finally, I really do believe that the right sixth grade student, with just a little bit of guidance, is close enough to the needs of students to do a great job running an elementary school.
