Audible Audiobook (Spoken Realms, Feb. 11, 2019)
Androcles and the Lion By George Bernard Shaw Presented by The Online Stage George Bernard Shaw based his "religious pantomime" Androcles and the Lion on the ancient fable of the runaway slave who pulls a painful thorn from a lion's paw, thereby making a lifelong friend. Shaw explained that his play was in part a reaction to the huge success of J. M. Barrie's Peter Pan: "I wrote Androcles to show what a play for children should be like." This tale of a puny Greek tailor triumphing over the Roman emperor is, as always with Shaw, a commentary on the politics of his time, with the emperor standing in for the British government and, indeed, all repressive regimes. Androcles and the Lion will delight audiences of all ages by alternating laughter with pathos, philosophy with fun, and satire with sincerity. Cast Narrator (G.B. Androcles lives a miserable life as the slave of a cruel and unjust master. Even though runaway slaves face the death penalty, he flees to the nearby woods. There Androcles delights in his new-found freedom. He also makes an unusual friend: a lion with an injured paw. The two live together happily, but the lion gets captured, and shortly afterwards Androcles, too. Androcles is punished by being fed to a lion. Androcles prepares to die, glad that he has enjoyed a few weeks of freedom. To his surprise, the ferocious lion doesn’t attack. It’s the lion he helped! The emperor, amazed at what he observed, frees both Androcles and the lion. Androcles then spreads the message that everyone should appreciate their freedom and that slavery should be abolished. This retelling of Aesop’s classic fable demonstrates the importance of freedom and friendship.

Excerpt from Androcles and the Lion: A Fable PlayI say distinctive, because his common humanity and his subjection to time and space (that is, to the Syrian life of his period) involved his belief in many things, true and false, that in no way distinguish him from other Syrians of that time. But such common beliefs do not constitute specific Christianity any more than wearing a beard, work ing in a carpenter's shop, or believing that the earth 1s flat and that the stars could drop on it from heaven like hail stones. Christianity interests practical statesmen now be cause of the doctrines that distinguished Christ from the Jews and the Barabbasques generally, including ourselves.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Androcles, a runaway slave, is befriended by a lion when he removes a huge thorn from its paw. For years the two live to-gether in the desert, until soldiers capture Androcles and are ordered to throw him to the beasts. Led into the grand arena, Androcles falls to his knees, accepting his fate, but then he looks into the eyes of the lion and recognizes his old friend. Amid cheers from the crowd, Androcles and the lion are set free. The earliest version of the well-known tale, Apion’s eyewitness account, is the source for this dramatic retelling.

  • Androcles and the Lion: A Fable Play

    Bernard Shaw

Paperback (Forgotten Books, July 20, 2012)
Overture: forest sounds roaring of lions. Christian hymn faintly. A jungle path. A lions roar, a melancholy suffering roar, comes from the jungle. It is repeated nearer. The lion limps from the jungle on three legs, holding up his right forepazv, in which a huge thorn sticks. He sits down and contemplates it. He licks it. He shakes it. He tries to extract it by scraping it along the ground, and hurts himself worse. He roars piteously. He licks it again. Tears drop from his eyes. He limps painfully off the path and lies down under the trees, exhausted with pain. With a long sigh, like wind in a trombone, he goes to sleep. Androcles and his wife Megaera come along the path. He is a small, thin, ridiculous little man who might be any age from thirty to fifty-five. He has sandy hair, watery compassionate blue eyes, sensitive nostrils, and a very presentable forehead; but his good points go no further: his arms and legs and back, though wiry of their kind, look shrivelled and starved. He carries a big bundle, is very poorly clad, and seems tired and hungry. His wife is a rather handsome pampered slattern, well fed and in the prime of life. She has nothing to carry, and has a stout stick to help her along. MEGAERA S uddenly throwing down her stick I wont go another step. ANDROCLES pleading wearily Oh, not again, dear.(Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.)About the Publisher Forgotten Books is a publisher of historical writings, such as: Philosophy, Classics, Science, Religion, History, Folklore and Mythology.Forgotten Books' Classic Reprint Series utilizes the latest technology to regenerate facsimiles of historically important writings. Even though capture means his delivery to very hungry lions, Androcles escapes. When he comes across a wounded lion, he quickly and kindly offers aid.
