This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Introductions to the Study of Meteorites and Minerals, published in 1881 and 1884, respectively. It attempts to give, from a Museum point of view, a simple sketch of the relationships of Rocks, indicating all the more important characters and pointing out their significance. In a perfect Introduction mere speculation would be oided, and only statements would be made of which the icuracy could be proved, or at any rate suggested, by means of specimens small enough to be exhibited in proper sequence in the cases of a Museum. Further, the ideal Introduction would be brief, and yet not too condensed to be intelligible to every Visitor who, though without special scientific knowledge, has had a general education and is ready to give a amount of thought to the subject. But there are practical difficulties in the preparation of such guide-book; the whole of a rock-mass cannot be exhibited chi ledgi bod. gu lous characters or changes and many rocks require ical analysis for their disin a Museum, the causes of vario cannot be shown in actual operatic microscopic examination or chemic crimination: yet an Introduction even distantly approaching the ideal will doubtless be of service to those who come toE Mineral Collections of the Natural History Museum.
