An utterly delightful alphabet book."–Kirkus Review, starred review * "With wry humor, equally droll ink illustrations, and a solid dose of alliteration, Jeffers creates delightful mini-narratives for each letter of the alphabet."–Publishers Weekly, starred review * "An altogether stimulating, surprising, and satisfying reading experience."–School Library Journal, starred review* "Whimsical, funny, occasionally tragic, and highly entertaining, this collection of (sometimes) interlocking tales is brilliantly inventive."–Horn Book, starred review "Jeffers knows how to catch the attention of his young audience while challenging their imagination, intellect and vocabulary. This whimsical exploration of letters and language begs to be read over and over again."–BookPage "Handsome, humorous and clad in bright tomato-red, [this] is the sort of book you may want to rush into the arms of imaginative, good-natured children between 4 and 10 years old. [T]his is no traditional abecedarian exercise. The stories are wonderfully varied, sometimes philosophical and often end surprisingly; the drawings are just as quirky and unpredictable."–The Wall Street Journal "[W]itty from A to Z . . . no one would blame you for having a copy even if there are no kids in the house. Think of it as Edward Gorey for the preschool set — and their hip parents."–The Washington Post

  • An Alphabet of Animals

    Carton Moore Park

    Hardcover (Art / Books, June 18, 2019)
This charming volume is a facsimile of a children’s ABC of animals first published in 1899. Commissioned by Glasgow publisher Blackie & Son, it contains a short description and a full-page grisaille drawing for each animal, beginning with A for armadillo and ending with Z for zebra, with vignettes accompanying each letter. It was the first publication by Carton Moore Park, who specialized in animal subjects, and whose artistic style was strongly influenced by Japonisme. The quirky drawings, with modern-looking crops and close-up perspective, made the book stand out from all other alphabets of the day. The plate of the hippopotamus, for example, conveys the great bulk of the animal by forcing it up against the frame, while the image of the bat has the creature flying almost in the reader’s face. When the book was published, contemporary critics acclaimed the artist’s strong handling and accurate anatomical knowledge, as well as his appreciation of the habits and movements of the animals depicted. One wrote that “It is certainly the best book of the kind we have ever seen.” A hundred and twenty years after it was first published, this exquisite book―very much of its moment but modern in spirit―will enchant and educate a new generation of children.Carton Moore Park (1877–1956) was a British painter, illustrator and teacher. During the 1890s, he was best known for his illustrated books, such as An Alphabet of Animals, Book of Birds and A Book of Elfin Rhymes. He lived in London until 1910, when he emigrated to New York, where he spent the rest of his life.

An Alphabet of History Words by Wilbur D. Nesbit Pictures by Ellsworth YoungALEXANDER THE GREATAlexander in full armour.Alexander the Great was a victim of fate,And he sighed there was naught to delight himWhen he brandished his sword and defiantly roaredAnd could not get a country to fight him.All the armies he'd chased, all the lands laid to waste,And he clamored for further diversions; And our history speaks of his grip on the GreeksAnd his hammerlock hold on the Persians.Though the Gordian knot, cut in two, in a spotIn his palace was labeled a relic,Though Bucephalus, stuffed, gave him fame, he was huffed—He was grouchy and grumpy, was Aleck. And the cause of his woe, he would have you to know,Was the fact that he never was ableTo conduct a big scrap that a versatile chapOf a war correspondent would cable.
