Eighteen-year-old Raven has spent his entire life locked away in a secret Institute in northern Canada, where Dr. Strickland uses orphans for his heinous medical experimentation. A device inserted into Raven’s brain gives him the ability to explode things. After overhearing plans for his own termination, he explodes part of his prison and frees himself as well as five other teenagers. Though disfigured and scared, the kids each possess a special skill, except for Gina, Dr. Strickland’s daughter. Driven by guilt of her father’s actions, she helps the group escape from the institute’s constant pursuit, while hiding her true identity from them. Tate, the oldest, leads the group south. To survive their escape to Vancouver, the kids must learn to work as a team and gain acceptance of their altered selves. Arguments among them and mounting medical problems add to the group’s anxieties. Drawn to Gina, Tate is jealous of the sympathy she shows Raven. But to ensure the group’s safety, he must get the anti-social Raven to cooperate with him. When Gina and two others are captured by the Institute’s doctors, Raven has to decide if his new friends are important enough for him to overcome his strong fears of his own powers.
