The year it was published, for example, Resource Links, a publication, which reviews children's books for school librarians across Canada, put The Day the Zoo Came to Visit in its Best of the Year 2003 list.The plot, in a nutshell: two children who have visited the zoo in the morning are now sitting at home, very bored. There is a knock at the door, and they find that all the animals at the zoo have come to visit them! Chaos ensues as the animals begin to get into everything and generally wreak havoc. The challenge for the children is to get the animals out of the house. What age range is it intended for? Although aimed at children aged 3-7, children outside this age range can still get a lot out of the book for a variety of reasons. For younger children (up to age 5), the book might help to increase their awareness of animals and perhaps aid in teaching them the alphabet. It may even teach them a little politeness (the animals don't leave until Janey says "Please")! For older children (ages 6+) the book is intended to:- increase vocabulary- increase awareness of and recognition of animals- increase recognition and memory abilities- encourage an interest in zoos generally, and animals in particular.The authors also hope you as a parent or educator will get something out of this book, inviting your children (and you?) to learn more about the animals depicted.
