Paperback (Forgotten Books, July 13, 2017)
Excerpt from A Treatise on Magnetism: General and TerrestrialThe account which the author has given of the principal results obtained in recent years in connexion with the variations of terrestrial magnetism, will, he trusts, serve the same purpose; while, at the same time, it presents the general scientific reader with a condensed summary of the leading facts of the science. As it would have been impossible to give in a mode rate compass the numerical representation of the laws deduced at all the co-operating observatories, the course pursued has been to present the results oh tained at a single station, at which all the general features of the phenomena belonging to the middle northern latitudes were fully developed, and to sup plement the information by the results of observation at places widely removed from the former in geograp phical position, as well as in their relation to the sun's daily and yearly courses. The single station selected for this purpose is Dublin, partly because it fulfils the condition above described, and partly, also, because the reductions have been there made according to me thods' which appear to the author himself to be the most suitable.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Not illustrated. 1874 edition. Excerpt: ...purpose, it will be convenient to produce the equilibrium by turning the instrument in azimuth until the deflected needle is vertical; for, in this case, the deflecting magnet is horizontal, and can be placed in the usual position with respect to the deflected magnet without difficulty. For this purpose the apparatus is provided with a gun-metal bar, having a rectangular aperture, by means of which it passes over the box containing the deflected magnet, and rests on two supports fixed outside on the level of the agate planes. The deflecting magnet is to be placed on this support at different known distances, and on each side of the deflected magnet, its axis being in the plane in which the latter moves; and the apparatus is to be turned in azimuth until the deflected needle is vertical. In this case the general equation of equilibrium (96) becomes-X cos a = mil; in which U is of the form The quantities p and q are to be found in the usual manner, by repeating the observation at several known distances, and eliminating among the resulting equations. This being done, the deflecting magnet is to be removed from the bar, and placed in its ordinary position between the microscopes; and the observation is to be repeated. If a0 denote the corresponding azimuth, and U0 the value of U,-X cos eio = m Uo, whence cos a The method here proposed appears to offer the following advantages:--1. It is applicable with equal accuracy at all parts of the globe. 2. It dispenses with the employment of a separate instrument for the determination of the magnetic intensity, and with the separate adjustments required in placing it. 3. The constants to be determined--the magnitude of the added weight, and the radius of the pulley by which it acts--can be ascertained...

  • A Treatise On Magnetism: General and Terrestrial

    Humphrey Lloyd

Paperback (Ulan Press, Aug. 31, 2012)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
