  • Vulca the Etruscan

    Roberta Angeletti

Hardcover (Oxford University Press, Aug. 5, 1999)
Robbie and his dog Pip are playing ball right next to that sacred and mysterious place--the Necropolis. A mighty kick from Robbie sends the ball flying over the hill and out of sight. Looking for it, the boy and Pip stumble across the entrance to a strangely painted Etruscan tomb. They go down the narrow, dark stairway and end up in a square room whose walls are covered with brightly-colored paintings of vases, leopards, and people in funny robes. Pip finds a pair of mysterious wooden pipes on the floor. Robbie plays them, bringing Vulca--a man in the wall painting--to life. Vulca admits he took Robbie's ball. In return, he gives Robbie and Pip a tour of the Etruscan tombs and introduces them to the other people in the wall painting. As a thank you, Robbie lets Vulca take the ball into the wall painting with him, to puzzle other modern visitors to the tomb. A three-page appendix at the end of the book goes back through the ages to tell us more about the mysterious Etruscans--what they did for a living, what clothes they wore, what games they liked, and what language they spoke. It also defines such intriguing words as necropolis, haruspices, augurs, and lucumo.

  • The Cave Painter of Lascaux

    Roberta Angeletti

Hardcover (Oxford University Press, Dec. 9, 1999)
Cecilia is on a school trip to the Lascaux caves in southern France--a mysterious place with well-preserved prehistoric paintings on the walls. These are believed to have been created by our primitive ancestors several hundred thousand years ago. The little girl notices some strange footprints on the ground. Following them, she walks away from the other children and arrives in a dark, wide hall. She is about to turn on her flashlight, when suddenly ... Flash! Her camera flash goes off and lights up the paintings of deer and hunters on the walls. The flash goes off again and she sees more animals chiseled in the walls. In the dark, she feels someone trying to pull the camera off her neck. Frightened, she turns around and sees a primitive man. He gestures to her that he is the painter of the walls. Leading her out of the cave, he tries to start a fire by striking two sticks against each other. Cecilia has to get back, because her school bus is leaving, but she leaves the primitive man a box of matches as a farewell gift. Three pages at the end of the story explain how prehistoric people lived, what tools they used, how they painted, and how they hunted.

  • Nefertari, Princess of Egypt

    Roberta Angeletti

Hardcover (Oxford University Press, Aug. 5, 1999)
Anna is a little girl who loves cats, even though she is allergic to them. On vacation with her family in Egypt, she notices a gray cat and decides to take her picture. Following her new friend, the little girl slips right into the tomb of Nefertari, the mighty and beautiful Egyptian queen. Anna is admiring the splendid wall paintings when Nefertari herself appears with the cat in her arms. The queen explains that cats were sacred in Egypt, and introduces Anna to the cat goddess, Bastet, and other gods. She asks the little girl to take her photograph with Osiris-Ra and the other figures in the wall painting. At the crucial moment, however, the jackal-headed god Anubis barks and startles the cat. She jumps into Anna's arms, Anna sneezes, and the photograph is ruined. The tomb keeper wakes up and rushes in to find innocent-faced Anna all by herself, but all the Egyptians have switched positions on the walls. A three-page chapter at the end of the book goes back through time to tell us who the mighty Egyptians were, how they built their gigantic pyramids, who their gods were, how their kings were buried, and how they wrote down words. It also explains such fascinating words as pharaoh, sarcophagus, papyrus, and hieroglyphs.
