During a health class, Alice notices Mother coughing. Over the next few weeks, Mother gets sicker and weaker. Will Daddy have to take Mother to the hospital? Alice asks Jesus to help Mother stop coughing. She knows she should pray for God's will to be done, but she can't imagine why God wouldn't want to make a missionary well.

Alice, a Seventh-Day Adventist living comfortably in Portland, Oregon, in the 1920s, learns trust in God when her family accepts a mission to China.

While journeying to China so that her parents can begin their missionary work, Alice joins a pair of red-headed twins in following mysterious messages around the ship, weathering a storm, and observing the Sabbath.

Alice is getting used to chopsticks and Chinese characters, but she's terribly homesick. When she's not playing with her new friend, Li Li, or practicing Chinese, Alice is either planning neighborhood Sabbath Schools or helping Mother teach Chinese ladies health classes.
