  • Stories, Music, and Imagery: A Doorway To a Child's Self-Esteem

    Linda Powell, June Ellen Bradley

eBook (Word Association Publishers, Dec. 28, 2017)
This book includes introductory material, a parent-teacher’s guide, the process I call Music-Inspired Creativity (MIC), and twenty original stories. The stories are to be shared with children eight to twelve years of age. The audio with classical music selections to be played after each story provides a doorway for the children to expand self-awareness, share personal experiences, and discover their values. This music also encourages a child to interact with the meaning of the story and deepens the experiential possibilities for the child. The MIC process can be used by teachers in public and private schools, facilitators in community centers and after-school programs, parents with their own children, adults working with children in individual and group settings, therapists and counselors of children with special needs, and directors of character education programs. The MIC process gives the child a safe place to explore imagination under gentle adult guidance. In this place, the child can discover personal empowerment and self-awareness.The following is an outline of the MIC process:1. Read the story.2. Help the children relax, quiet their bodies, and close their eyes or softly stare.3. Read the “directions” to the children. Each set of directions encourages the children to relate to the meaning of that particular story.4. Play the audio to hear the music at the end of each story.5. Gently invite the children to bring their attention back to the room.6. Ask the children to describe their experience during the music through writing, drawing, or verbal sharing. In sharing this process with children, I have seen their smiles as they respond with comments such as, “That’s neat!” “That was fun!” “Let’s do that again.” I have seen children discover and use their imagination in new ways as they explore a new idea or awareness and find ways to make positive changes in their life. Their descriptions showed the validity of their experience, and their responses highlighted their interaction with the essence of the story. I am constantly amazed by the wisdom of our children.
