  • Between Modern Dance and Intercultural Performance: The Multiple Truths of the Bird Belly Princess

    Heather Strohschein

Paperback (VDM Verlag Dr. Müller, March 18, 2008)
Cultural appropriation or "theft" is a point of contention among scholars and performers. When American performance artists use non-Western cultural elements-such as music, dance, or material items-questions of authenticity, identity, and entitlement are raised. Between two opposing extremes, "Romantic individualism" and essentialism, exists a continuum where most theatrical performances reside. This work examines the stance of cultural appropriation in relation to modern dance, music, and intercultural performance. The focus of the examination is "At Last, The Tale of the Bird Belly Princess, Tien-Savi-Tsuru-Chak," a production directed, choreographed, and performed by members of Bowling Green State University''s faculty and student body. The performance, which incorporated elements of Korean and Balinese music and dance, ran a fine line between cultural appropriation and artistic freedom. It is necessary to examine a work from many angles in order to understand the various "truths" it expresses. This analysis should be useful to ethnomusicologists, dance ethnologists, and other scholars considering issues of authenticity, identity, and cultural appropriation.

  • FOOD SAFETY ISSUES IN AIRLINE CATERING SECTOR: Food related epidemiology

    OMOYEMI ADEGBOYE

Paperback (VDM Verlag Dr. Müller, Oct. 5, 2010)
Food safety issue in the airline catering sector is an all encompassing issue that involves the food preparation from siting of the industry, to storage and handling by crew members. When food served on board is not produced and handled under strict hygienic conditions and following food safety rules, incidents of foodborne illnesses can result. Cases of foodborne disease outbreaks aboard commercial aircraft from 1947 to 2007 were analysed in this book with the focus on the vehicle of infection, causative agent and factors responsible for the outbreaks. The analysis of these outbreaks revealed that microbial infection is not directly related to the type of food served on board, but to weaknesses and failures in the system such as lack of compliance with basic food handling and general hygiene principles and also because HACCP principles were not in place when many of the outbreaks occurred, although a few outbreaks still occurred following the introduction of HACCP principles in this sector. The strict adherence to food safety as highlighted in this book will help prevent the reoccurrence of airline foodborne diseases outbreaks, otherwise an outbreak is inevitable.
  • Cyber-Crime Fear and Victimization: An Analysis of A National Survey

    Abdullah Alshalan

Paperback (VDM Verlag Dr. Müller, Dec. 12, 2008)
The aim of this study was to investigate cyber-crime victimization among Internet users in the United States by: 1) assessing the factors that impact computer virus victimization; 2) assessing the factors that impact cyber-crime victimization; and 3) predicting fear of cyber-crime. The findings of this study indicate that routine activity theory was a powerful predictor of computer virus victimization and cyber-crime victimization. That is, risk exposure and suitable targets helped determine the victimization. The study also found that cyber-crime victimization, gender, and perceived seriousness were predictive of fear of cyber-crime.
  • Environmentalism and Tourists' Experiences on Swim-With Dolphins Tours: A case study of New Zealand

    Michael Lück

Paperback (VDM Verlag Dr. Müller, Jan. 30, 2009)
Over the past decades, the demand for nature-based tourism has increased drastically, with a particularly high demand for whale and dolphin watching. This study examines environmental values, attitudes and behaviour of tourists on dolphin tours in New Zealand, and how they relate to their on-tour experiences. A demographic profile of participants formed the basis for these analyses, which employed the New Environmental Paradigm (NEP) scale, the Environmental Concern (EC) scale, and the General Measure of Ecological Behavior (GEB). Factors contributing to the visitor experience, including interpretation and education, tourist satisfaction, and perceived crowding were also addressed. Results indicate that tourists on dolphin tours generally embrace high environmental values and attitudes, although their environmental behaviour does not consistently reflect this. Demographic characteristics have insignificant influence on both the environmental consciousness, and the on-tour experience. Tour staff have good knowledge about dolphins, but respondents expect more information about the wider marine environment. Crowding is a minor problem that does not seem to influence the experience.
  • THE SVETLANA IN ME: How I embraced my Turkish identity in order to play a Russian/Estonian for an American audience

    Setenay Yener

Paperback (VDM Verlag Dr. Müller, Dec. 23, 2008)
There are actors of all cultures and nationalities, and when exercising their craft in another culture; that task becomes a challenging experience. The hardest part of this challenge might be realizing and accepting one's personal and cultural differences. For some actors this can result in years of self-struggle, and attempts to either dismiss their culture completely, or fully embrace their own culture and close the doors to any other ways of thinking. Through a personal experience of a Turkish actress in the United States, this book documents a journey from seeing foreignness as a handicap, to the realization that being a foreign actor can have many rewards. A good source for any actor performing for an audience who shares a different cultural background than him/her. Also a beneficial study for every other theatre artist, as the world is getting smaller and our neighborhoods more diverse. Plus, we never know where we might be working next!
  • Ibsen''s Eschatology: Durkheim''s Suicides in Ibsen''s Prose Corpus

    Heather Elise Hamilton

Paperback (VDM Verlag Dr. Müller, Sept. 12, 2008)
Emile Durkheim and Henrik Ibsen were both products ofthe intellectual milieu that saw the birth ofsociology and the advent of an intellectual interestin the individual. Suicide, that most taboo oftopics, was examined in the work of both thinkers, and both concluded independently that it was the gorysymptom of societies that failed to balance the needsof the community and the individual. Durkheim’stheories about the three social causes of suicide canbe effectively applied to the suicides (both symbolicand literal) in Ibsen’s prose corpus. The connectionbetween the two iconic thinkers, separated ingeographical distance but not in ideologies, revealsthat the tides of European thought had becomefundamentally concerned with exploring the balancebetween a person’s fierce need for individuality, anda society’s desperate need for internal cohesion.
  • Negotiations and Decision-Making in the European Union - Teaching and Learning through Role-Play Simulation Games

    Mirko Siemssen, Matthias Kreuzeder

Paperback (VDM Verlag Dr. Mueller e.K., Oct. 25, 2007)
Understanding the complex mechanisms of negotiations and decision-making in the EU is a difficult task, even for trained experts. For students who are just learning about the field, trying to untangle this complexity is even more challenging. Even though more and more scholars agree that cooperative learning methods are effective tools for teaching about international institutions, these approaches are still neglected in the area of European policy-making. This study is an attempt to address the neglect. The authors suggest that role-play simulation games, if implemented with sufficient supervision, are exceptional instruments for learning and teaching in higher education courses. Drawing on a broad theoretical framework of negotiation and education theory, the authors develop a concept for simulation game scenarios that can conveniently be applied to classroom-based instruction on the EU. The book addresses both university lecturers and professionals, who are teaching in the area of EU institutions, negotiations and decision-making.
  • Tobacco Control- Comparative Public Policy in the United Kingdom and South Africa

    Bossman Asare

Paperback (VDM Verlag Dr. Mueller e.K., Oct. 25, 2007)
The book investigates the effects of federalism and multi-level governance on tobacco control policy adoption in the United Kingdom and South Africa. It uses theories of federalism and multi-level governance, as well as policy transfer (diffusion) and interest groups politics to investigate their effects on tobacco control policy. In this exploration, the various policies that have been adopted by various governments in the two countries as well as the European Union are examined, as is the relationship between the policies adopted and international benchmarks on tobacco control. Methodologically, the book uses comparative case analyses augmented by elite interviews and secondary sources. Overall, the study argues that the various explanations have influenced the adoption of comprehensive tobacco control policies in the two countries, and both countries are converging in their tobacco control policies, except for differences relating to the role of provinces. This is a must book for courses in public policy, comparative public policy, and the UK and South African Governments and the EU. It will also be useful for NGOs and researchers engaged in tobacco control.
  • Emotionally Intelligent Ballet Training- Facilitating Emotional Intelligence in Vocational Dance Training

    Thom Hecht

Paperback (VDM Verlag Dr. Mueller e.K., Nov. 7, 2007)
Emotionally Intelligent Ballet Training (EIBT) provides a research-based compendium of learning and teaching activities and offers a way forward for ballet teachers and student dancers seeking to improve their social and emotional learning and teaching tools, to enhance the quality of vocational dance training and to foster artistic, social and technical competence. Learning and teaching ballet at the highest level puts great demands on the individual. Student dancers must cope with their own expectations and career goals alongside the intense demands of traditional authoritarian ballet pedagogy. Ballet teachers are under pressure to foster, nurture and teach ballet to highly talented adolescents in mental and physical preparation for a successful career in dance, an extremely competitive profession. This book explores the emotional aspects of learning and teaching ballet at elite dance conservatoires using an inductive-deductive research methodology, outlining the potential of applying the concept of social and emotional learning and teaching in a dance-specific context. This work will interest not only dance scholars, but also ballet teachers and student dancers in vocational training institutions. At present, EIBT is the only programme that uses emotional intelligence theories in a dance educational context, bringing emotional learning and teaching to the centre of dance education.

  • Being in the Just War

    Phillip W. Gray

Paperback (VDM Verlag Dr. Mueller e.K., Oct. 22, 2007)
When debating upon how to react to new styles of warfare in the 21st century, scholars and political leaders often invoke the language of the just war doctrine. However, while terms such as "last resort" and "legitimate authority" are frequently used, their meaning is often vague or improperly used. In what ways can we make the terminology of just war more concrete and meaningful? This study examines the philosophical structure of the just war tradition, in particular focusing on its origins. Through an analysis of the ontological presuppositions of Augustine's arguments on just war, this study explains some of the fundamental assumptions necessary for the just war doctrine to remain coherent. By investigating contemporary attempts to address morality in warfare, this study also explains why major schools of thought (realism, international law, liberalism) fail in this endevour. This book will be of use to scholars of political theory, international relations, and intellectual history. It will also prove useful to researchers who focus political theology, ethics in warfare, and conflict studies.
