  • Yuri Whiskerin's True Tale of the Invasion of the Shrews

    Yuri Whiskerin, Michael Lukowiak

Hardcover (Terabyte Press, Oct. 25, 2016)
Brave pet hamsters enlist to help Central Operations protect the secret underground civilization of Hamsterville from an evil plot to turn it into Shrew City. Will the pets be able to keep their pet keepers from finding out about their nightly activities? Will they be able to defeat the dangerous shrews? Hamster Yuri Whiskerin tells the tale. Attention, Human Readers! The hamsters, shrews, rats, people, events, and places in this book are described as accurately as possible from my own first-hand observations as well as from many interviews with the rodents and people involved. In no instance have I just made anything up. Only when it comes to the shrews have I taken the slightest artistic liberty, for it would be impossible to completely re-create events from their points of view without risking my life. But here’s what I can tell you about the shrews that you can fact-check for yourself: 1. Certain shrews, including the short-tailed North American shrew that lives in the woods of New Hampshire, actually do have fangs and a venomous bite—sort of like a snake, only they are mammals, not reptiles. 2. Shrews eat several times their body weight each day, including (gulp) rodents like me. 3. Shrews are not rodents (perish the thought) because their teeth do not continuously grow. 4. Shrews sometimes eat other shrews. Also, if you are a Pet Keeper, please consult your pet store or vet before trying any of the foods eaten by the hamsters of Hamsterville on your own pet hamster. The daring feats described in this historical account should not be tried at home. Jumping from a height of a foot or more could seriously injure your hamster. One last warning. The mothers of very young hamsters and children should know that this book contains some descriptions of violence that occurred when the shrews invaded Hamsterville. They were expecting helpless rodents. Thankfully, those shrews misjudged us hamsters, otherwise I would not have survived to write this book. Now, for you, and for hamsters everywhere, what follows is the story of the Invasion of the Shrews. Respectfully submitted, Yuri Whiskerin, Secretary for the Nonehedrans, Central Operations, Hamsterville. Yuri
