    This tale of an early 19th-century lawyer and his strange first four clients first appeared in Colliers in 1898. Morse: Howard Pyle, a Record of..., pp. 6 & 138. Of the seven illustrations present here, six are in red and black, the seventh, on the leaf facing the title page, is in full color. Five of the illustrations served originally as headpieces, which explains their somewhat odd shape. Illustrations have tissue protectors. The title page has an elaborate red and black border with a vignette in red, and there are also seven decorative initials and a back cover ornament, all by an unidentified artist. Covers and backing are somewhat soiled, with head and tail of backing rubbed. Corners, rims of boards rubbed. Paper covering loose at one place on front. 98, 2 pages, with 6 additional leaves of plates. original quarter cloth, decorated paper-covered boards, edges tinted red.. small 8vo..
