  • Titanic & Her Sisters Olympic & Britannic

Tom; Michael Sharpe; Leo Marriott McCLUSKIE

Paperback (Parkgate Books, March 15, 1998)
In the early 21st century, over 100 years after her demise, the Titanic is the most notorious ship ever to have taken to the sea. Her tragic story has fascinated every generation from the time, even before her sinking, that every Victorian schoolboy could recite her colossal dimension by heart. More recently, James Cameron's 1997 movie, Titanic, grossed in excess of $1.8 billion, making it one of the biggest block-busters ever-an indication of the extent to which she continues to capture the imaginations of people worldwide. It is less widely known that she was the second of the three vessels known as the 'Olympic' class. Her sisters were the Olympic and the Britannic. Together, these were the largest and the most luxurious liners of their time, their sheer size giving an overwhelming feeling of safety and security. This was backed by the best traditions of British shipbuilding and the latest techniques of design and construction. However, only one of them, Olympic, was to have a full career and Britannic, just a year after entering service and despite many modications to further enhance safety after Titanic'; loss, sank after hitting a mine in a chilling echo of her sister's fate. Titanic and Her Sisters is a denitive account of these three beautiful ships and details their stories from the events that shaped their construction to the relatively recent Cameron movie and the salvage of artifacts from Titanic's wreck. Illustrated with over 500 pictures, many of them in full color, this collaboration of three writers, each of them who are noted for their expertise, is, perhaps, the most comprehensive work ever produced on the subject. A very large 9.25" x 12" format and 512 pages of fascinating text and hundreds of photos, well over 5 lbs / PRC Publishers, London 1998

  • A-Typical Plan: Projects and Essays on Identity, Flexibility and Atmosphere in the Office Building

    Jeannette Kuo

Paperback (Park Books, Oct. 15, 2013)
As a typology conceived in the twentieth century, the office building is often the architectural manifestation— not only of global capital, but also of technological might and mass production. But when we think of these buildings, we often think more of objects than of space; more of appearance than of atmosphere. In A-Typical Plan, Jeannette Kuo offers a reversal of the experience, starting from the inside out, and prioritizing space over symbol. In particular, the book reconsiders the deep plan within the European context for a discussion on density, economy and, not least, sustainability. Featuring buildings by architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Kenzo Tange, Giuseppe Terragni, Le Corbusier, SANAA, Herzog & de Meuron, Toyo Ito, Christian Kerez, and many others, A-Typical Plan presents a collection of projects through history that have attempted to bring character to the deep plan as a spatial experience for the workspace. The work features essays by renowned authors, including Iñaki Ábalos, Pier Vittorio Aureli, Andrea Bassi, Florian Idenburg, Jeannette Kuo, Freek Persyn, and Antoine Picon. A conversation with Inès Lamunière and a graphic essay by Jimenez Lai round out the diverse perspectives. A final chapter presents the work of students at the EPFL, with whom this research began. Succinct and beautifully illustrated, A-Typical Plan is a reminder that even buildings created for quotidian uses can be spatially and experientially rich.
  • Owen Grey & the Changeling

    Reginald Wiebe, Stephan Wiebe

language (Parka Books, Nov. 19, 2011)
A few points of interest about Faeries:They don’t have wings and are actually quite tall. They can’t touch iron but they can do magic. They will kidnap you and sell you into indentured servitude if you’re not careful.(It’s really the kidnapping thing that you should probably pay the most attention to.)Owen Grey – twelve years old and sick of his summer routine of homework and chores – didn’t know a thing about Faeries. So it’s not really his fault that he doesn’t know the risks when a charming burglar named Dumas shows Owen the way through a magic painting and into the Faerie Kingdoms. Promptly kidnapped and sold to a very short, very rich, very bitter man named Trench, Owen has to figure out how to escape. This would be a lot easier if Trench’s castle wasn’t filled with mysterious rooms, Goblin prisoners, magic wands, glowing eels, and Faerie nobility in disguise. It would also be easier if Owen’s freedom didn’t also mean the return of the terrifying Stone King – a man who can make the dead speak. Owen’s going to have to choose: save the Faerie Kingdoms and never see his family again or escape and let a magical realm burn.
